Pinkeye: A production-limiting disease in cattle

One disease which can cause serious health problems over late spring and into the summer period is Pinkeye.   It mainly affects young stock in their first year of life, but outbreaks affecting older classes of cattle, particularly those with no prior exposure, can occur.  It’s frustrating, stressful and costly!

The main bacteria (Moraxella bovis) that causes Pinkeye has the ability to attach itself to the surface of the eye, the cornea. This results in an inflammatory reaction that leads to severe swelling and ulceration of the cornea.  In severe cases the cornea will rupture and either partial or total blindness can occur.

This is an extremely painful process which results in dramatic drops in feed intake, leading to reduced weight gain and in most cases weight loss. If adult lactating cattle have clinical disease, then the result can often be a drop in milk production.

We often see this disease in recently weaned calves and in high stock density situations where the mixing of different mobs occurs.   Dry, dusty and windy conditions over spring and summer can result in the spread of disease, rapidly triggering unwelcome growth checks you really don’t want to see.

An important strategy in the prevention of Pinkeye is vaccination – a single shot of Piliguard®3-6 weeks before the risk period starts will reduce the number and severity of cases.  Piliguard Pinkeye-1 Trivalent is the only vaccine available in New Zealand to prevent Pinkeye.
