Cepralock®

Internal teat sealant for the prevention of mastitis during the non-lactating (dry) period.

Active Ingredient
BISMUTH SUBNITRATE 650 mg/g. Also contains 1 mg/g PVP-iodine as a preservative

Indications
For the prevention of mastitis during the non-lactating (dry) period:

  • In lactating heifers (first calvers) and cows with somatic cell counts (SCC) of less than 120,000 and 150,000 respectively.
  • In cows and heifers with a higher somatic cell count (SCC) immediately following treatment with appropriate antibiotic dry cow therapy.

CEPRALOCK is also indicated for the prevention of peri-calving mastitis in maiden heifers in herds where peri-calving mastitis is clinically significant.

Dosage
Lactating heifers and cows with SCC below 120,000 and 150,000 respectively:
Immediately after the last milking at drying off, prior to treatment with CEPRALOCK, the udder should be stripped. The recommended method is to disinfect and treat one teat at a time using new teat wipes (or cotton wool balls moistened in 70% methylated spirits and 30% clean water).
Clean teat end thoroughly until the teat end and teat wipes or cotton balls are visibly clean, allow to dry, and then immediately and immediately infuse the entire contents of one CEPRALOCK syringe to form a seal. Repeat the process on the other three teats and finish by teat spraying all teats. After infusion do not massage or squeeze the teat, as this may dislodge the seal.

Insert appropriate antibiotic dry cow therapy and massage into the quarter as per the respective product label.
Re-disinfect the teat. Carefully infuse the entire contents of one CEPRALOCK syringe to form a seal. Repeat the process on the other three teats and finish by teat spraying all teats. After infusion do not massage or squeeze the teat, as this may dislodge the seal.

Maiden heifers
CEPRALOCK should only be administered to maiden heifers in herds where heifer mastitis levels are clinically significant. Care should be taken to ensure administration of CEPRALOCK in heifers is performed to best practice recommendations. Administer CEPRALOCK pre-calving before springing (‘bagging up’) of the udder; ie. from approximately four weeks to one week prior to the planned start of calving in a typical seasonally calving herd. It is not recommended to administer CEPRALOCK closer than one week prior to calving.

Withholding Period
Milk: Milk intended for sale for human consumption must be discarded during treatment for not less than 8 milkings or approximately 96 hours after calving.

Meat: Nil
