Is your dog suffering from DRY EYE? -Take a closer Look

Keratoconjuncitivitis sicca (KCS) or DRY EYE in dogs results from auto-immune destruction of the tear glands. Natural tear production is reduced, leading to painful eye conditions such as development of ulcers or blood vessels across the eye, recurrent infections and loss of vision.

Failure to diagnose early and treat lifelong will allow degenerative changes to become established. Permanent blindness may ensue.

Early signs of dry eye are not always clinically apparent. However, dry eye can quickly and easily be diagnosed using a Schirmer Tear Test.

Dry eye is most common in middle aged and older dogs, and some dog breeds such as: West Highland White Terrier, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel, Shih Tzu, Miniature Schnauzer, Pekingese, Bulldog, Pug and Lhasa Apso.

Optimmune is the only veterinary registered treatment for dry eye in dogs.

Optimmune ophthalmic ointment contains 0.2% cyclosporin, an immune modulatory drug that is also used to prevent transplant rejection in humans.

Optimmune treats the underlying autoimmune disease that causes dry eye as well as the symptoms by:

  • Stimulating the tear glands to resume normal tear production.

  • Halting the immune destruction of these glands.

  • Reducing inflammation of the eyes.
